"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children--not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women--not merely peace in our time but peace for all time."

- John F. Kennedy

Students Against War of San Francisco State University will be hosting a summit on the evening of the January 20th counter-inaugural protest in San Francisco. This summit is open to all members of student antiwar organizations as well as students who are not affiliated with any such organizations but who want to become a part of the antiwar movement.
By holding this summit, we are providing an opportunity for students involved in the movement to come together to discuss why we feel that a movement is necessary, what students roles in the past have been in the antiwar struggle, and what we can do as student activists to build the movement. We hope to come out of this event with a stronger idea of what our goals in the movement are, as well as with a unified student plan of action.
As we have no concrete estimate of attendance, we have created a flexible agenda for the evening:
1- We will open up the summit with a talk concerning the urgent need for a stronger antiwar movement and a motivation for people to get more involved. We are contacting Iraq Veterans Against the War and Veterans For Peace, and should have a speaker from either one or both groups give a short talk about the importance of organizing against war as well as how their organizations can be used a great resource for antiwar organizing.
2-Then we will have a member of our organization present information about the Campus Antiwar Network, a national student antiwar organization which all campuses can be involved in to better link themselves to the national antiwar movement.
-- We want to have as much time as possible to allow for discussion amongst all attendees so that we can get a good sense of where the movement is politically, what needs to be done to get campuses more active in the movement, and to create a plan of unified action for all campuses to be a part of. Students Against
War will propose that each campus organize over the next two months to build for the March 20th demonstration which will protest the second anniversary of the beginning of the current Iraq war. As a part of this, we suggest that each campus hold an event with either Iraq Veterans Against the War or Veterans for Peace as a way to engage other students and bring them into the movement and as a good building block for March 20th.
We are still in the process of setting a time and place for this summit, so we will have to contact you later when we have the exact details.
Anyone interested in helping us organize for this event is free to come to one of our organizing meetings. The next SAW meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 4th at 12noon. We will meet at the Java Beach Cafe at the corner of La Playa (basically 49th Ave) and Judah in San Francisco.
The first formal summit-planning meeting will be held on Sunday January 9th at 7pm, also at the Java Beach Cafe. We will be holding a sign-making party as well as a final summit-planning meeting on Sunday, January 16th at 5pm, location yet to be determined.
If you are interested either in attending the summit or being involved in the organizing for the summit, please contact us as soon as possible. We don't yet have a location for the summit, so we need to have a list of everyone who wants to attend so we can let you know once a location has been established. We can also provide directions to the Java Beach Cafe if you are unfamiliar with San Francisco.

Thank you,
Students Against War
