Free Speech in Corte Madera July 4th Parade
ALL PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE INCLUDED NEXT YEAR!!!

Stan Hoffman of, Corte Madera Business and Development Org., and once a year Parade Man said the Impeachment Banner was negative and he asked me to secede from the festivities or we would not be included in the Parade next year.  And I said..."Impeachment is indeed a POSITIVE message which will benefit the whole world."

Since the Mill Valley parade organizers let 11 phone calls determine the extinction of free speech I encourage us to phone Stan at 924 2961 and explain about the positive nature of peace, troops at home and impeachment in the White House.  Tell him how great the parade was especially the free speech contingency waving the Impeach Banner. Keep the Fourth of July Parade centered around the revolution and the birth of democracy. Don't let the parade become a "Hallmark" event promoting false nationalism and local commercialism.

Please ask your friends to participate in this local action for neighborhood free speech.

Section 8 Housing subsides are threatened
Emergency housing crisis looming
Many of the two million disabled, seniors and poor families in this country, including hundreds in Marin will soon be homeless. HUD has already cut back Section 8 housing assistance funding, and if Bush is re-elected billions of dollars will be slashed. The City of Alameda has already put many out on the street. Write to your local representatives, Boxer, Feinstein and Woolsey and tell them to keep funding for housing and tell all your friends living in other parts of the country especially republican areas to write their representatives. Check out these websites for more information: www.savehud.org and www.nlihc.org or contact Marion Brady at 415/847-3829 or marion204@juno.com for actions here in Marin.

As you may have heard, a movement has been launched to convince theater owners not to show Michael Moore's new film, Fahrenheit 9/11.  The "movement", called "Move America Forward", has launched a page on its Web site that calls Michael Moore a "domestic enemy" and provides a list of theater chains that are planning to show Moore's new movie. The page provides e-mail addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers and addresses for these theater chains.  The page states: "We need these executives to be overwhelmed with letters, phone calls and FAXes in addition to emails."

Move America Forward is not grassroots.  It is the brainchild of what Richard Leiby, the Washington Post's "Reliable Source" calls a "Republican-friendly PR and political strategy firm". The firm is Russo Marsh & Rogers.  What is Russo Marsh & Rogers most recently famous for? They were the ones who led the charge to oust Gray Davis. They were also the ones who pushed CBS to cancel "The Reagans" miniseries.

Turnabout is fair play.

Feeling angry about the sad state of affairs BUSH and Co has gotten us into?  Ready to do something?

6 THINGS YOU (yes, you!) CAN DO
TO OPPOSE WAR and ENCOURAGE PEACE:

1.Gather signatures for UFPJ's Congressional petition drive. The form can be downloaded at: http://www.unitedforpeace.org/downloads/Iraq_Petition.pdf.
Add the contact information for our local group, make copies, and use the petition to organize a campaign to reach new people. Get actual signatures on a real peace of paper! Before you turn the petition over to your Congressional representatives be sure to make two copies: one to keep for our group and one to send to the national office of UFPJ.

2. Call your representatives at least once a week. Make the commitment as an individual, as families, and as local groups. To make this easier, use the talking points we will be posting and updating regularly on our website.

3. Get your Congressperson to sign a "Dear Colleagu"" letter calling for withdrawal. Several groups are working with Congressional representatives to draft a "Dear Colleague" letter to allow representatives to show where they stand on the occupation. This can be a great organizing tool and a way to widen the debate in Congress. We ask that when you call, write, or visit your representatives to ask them to sign on to the letter. The letter should be ready within a few weeks; we'll keep you posted.

4. Plan to make Memorial Day a day of awareness. March with MPJC members in Mill Valley's Memorial Day Parade in our fantastic Peace Procession!  Additionally, Veterans for Peace is working with the National Council of Churches to call on local clergy to consider delivering sermons on peace and Iraq over the Memorial Day weekend. We suggest that military families and veterans be invited to speak at local group meetings and/or local places of worship. To maximize the impact of these events, start contacting local publications now to get the word out. In addition, ask local congregations to ring their bells for peace at 12 noon on Memorial Day so that your community can hear the sound of people of faith standing up for peace in solidarity with each other.

5. Join thousands on June 5th for the International Day of Emergency Protests.  Bring the troops home now - all foreign troops out of Iraq!  Also Haiti, Korea, Afghanistan, Philippines, Columbia, Cuba and Venezuela.  End the colonial occupation of Palestine and support the right to return.  Money for jobs, education, housing, and healthcare - not for war!  Defend civil liberties and civil rights.  San Francisco, 11am, UN Plaza on Market between 7th and Hyde, Civic Center BART.

6. June 5-11: End US Support for Israel's Occupation!  National Week of Action
June 2004 marks the 37th anniversary of Israel's illegal military occupation of Palestine's West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. This occupation denies the Palestinian people the right to self-determination, fuels bloodshed, and prevents the establishment of a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Our government provides Israel the military, economic, and diplomatic support Israel depends on to sustain its military occupation. Join with United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) and UFPJ member coalition US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation to demand that our government end its military, economic, and diplomatic support for Israel's illegal military occupation.  Visit www.unitedforpeace.org for details

Add Your Name to our New York Times Ad Opposing CAFTA
Would you trade away democracy, your environment and your rights to save 50 cents on your next T-shirt?
If not, we invite you to add your name to our full page add in the New York Times. Its message-- we, the undersigned, stand united in rejecting the Central American Free Trade Agreement, an expansion of NAFTA that gives undue power to greedy corporations at the expense of human rights, fair trade and the environment.
The Quixote Center is raising the $44,000 it takes to run this New York Times ad from small donors like you-- engaged citizens who proudly and publicly have declared their opposition to CAFTA. Together, we can send a powerful message to the corporate interests behind CAFTA-- Another World is Possible!
Go to http://www.quixote.org/cafta/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=101 and sign up!
CAFTA will
Expands corporate rights to sue governments over environmental laws if they lessen profit, while denying individual citizens the right to effectively petition for environmental and labor rights concerns.
Expands failed agricultural policies that feed biotech firms and agribusinesses at the expense of family farmers in the U.S. and Latin America.
Expands the race to the bottom, for lower wages and lower environmental standards.
Let your representative know you oppose expanding NAFTA to Central America. No CAFTA!

Our first orphanage and the name of the project comes from the recently established Motherly Care Children's Home, in Nairobi, Kenya. The shelter is run solely through volunteer efforts and is headed up by a selfless and heart full woman named Mary Metobo, called respectfully in the local dialect by Mama Mary. It is the goal of this project to assist orphanages to provide shelter, simple food, clothing and elementary education to children who have been orphaned in the AIDS epidemic. We are currently collecting funds and other donations to provide for the sixty children living in the shelter on the outskirts of Nairobi. Become a friend of the Home by making a modest donation, in cash or needed supplies. A charitable orgaization has been set up (EIN 56-2394048) and donations are tax deductible.

TAKE ACTION NOW:
Labor Injustice!   The proposed CA state budget for 2004 would be devastating to the In-Home Support Service (IHSS) program and employees. This effects 1200 people in Marin county.  Nearly a quarter would be completely removed from any in-home services.
Wage and benefits cuts.  Wages would be cut back to minimum wage.  Complete elimination of hard-won health and dental benefits lost.  No domestic work would be paid for any consumers who live with relatives.
Make your voice heard on this subject.

  • Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger  916 445-2841
  • State Senator John Burton  415 479-6612
  • Assemblyman Joe Nation  415 479-4920

For more details on these proposed cutbacks, call Pat. 454-5280.

There are no two ways about it, America Needs a New Foreign Policy.

Instead of leading the world in arms sales to dictatorships, let's lead a global effort to stop the arms trade. Instead of leading the world in producing nuclear weapons, let's lead a global campaign to dismantle them - including our own.

TOUCH-SCREEN VOTING: CA

Secretary of State Kevin Shelley appointed a task force last February to examine the issue. In its report issued July 2 (www.ss.ca.gov/elections/taskforce.htm ), the task force found flaws in the testing and certification process for
DRE machines, but only three of the nine task force members pushed for the paper trail. Shelley took public comments on the task force report, and the overall issue, until Aug. 1 (Kevin Shelley, attn: Touch Screen Report, 1500 11th St., Sacramento, CA 95814; taskforcecomments@ss.ca.gov; fax (916) 653-9675). You can visit http://www.verifiedvoting.org for more information and for direct links for taking action on this very important issue.

Voice your opposition to the Patriot Act and its expansion.

On the heels of the release of a critical Justice Department report that concluded authorities violated the civil rights of hundreds of immigrants detained since Sept. 11,  Attorney General John Ashcroft has urged Congress to give the Justice Department MORE power.  In June he asked Congress to expand the USA Patriot Act to permit the government to hold more suspects indefinitely, and to extend the death penalty to more people accused of terrorist crimes. He also said the current law needs to be expanded to let prosecutors bring charges against anyone who helps or works with suspected terrorist groups. This is the beginning of Patriot Act II “Domestic Security Enhancement Act”. We must aggressively lobby Congress if we are to defeat Ashcroft's call for more power.

GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS

Polls consistently show that over 90% of Americans say the federal government should require labels saying whether a product has been genetically modified or bioengineered. Such unanimity in public opinion is rare; however, the Bush administration opposes such labeling. In California right now cotton is the only commercial GE crop; however, GE fruits and vegetables and grains will be introduced here within the next few years if the biotechnology industry proceeds with its plans--plans being made without the knowledge, consent, or desire of most of California's citizens (California Certified Organic Farmers Magazine).
